now I’m going to address a pragmatic issue, that is, how to accrue advanced VR technologies for less than 8,000 Euros.
It is not so trivial finding adequate VR equipment (more than the even respectful Google Carboard), especially if you need it for a serious project.
Let’s begin with one of the most popular one: Apple. I am not keen on this brand, but I have to declare their customer service, especially the online chat service, is the best ever. They answer using different languages and are fast and careful. Anyway, why Apple for VR?
The answer is easy. Three months ago I saw the Structure sensor from Occipital company, which is able to turn your Iphone or Ipad into a VR device (actually an Augmented Reality device) easily and quickly. More, they have developed also a Head Mounted Display compatible with Iphone, which is called Bridge (if you really need it, you can also buy a t-shirt depicting the headset!!!!!). Anyway, it is really hard to find a way to contact them quickly. Far more difficult is to require a quote for all their interesting stuff. There is an e-mail address: support+bridge@structure.io
I think that customer service should be improved a lot, despite the potential quality of the equipment.You can merge reality and virtual reality. It is not fully new, but the way they do it it’s so. I just wish to see if my sofa will enter the virtual environment I will navigate in…
More, about laptop. I fell in love with GS63VR STEALTH PRO 4K (GEFORCE® GTX 1060).
You know, minimum specs for a laptop (or a pc) to support VR are:
1. Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor
2. Nvidia GeForce GTX 980, 1060, 1070 or 1080 GPU
3. 8GB of RAM
4. Two USB 3.0 ports
5. HDMI 1.4
6. 1920 x 1080 display
7. Windows 8 or 10
This laptop has everything! (of course is for gamers but also for researchers!!). Anyway, it is not easy again to find clear costs of this apparatus. I wrote to USsales@msi.com but I am still waiting for an answer. I really love the design and the shapes. You can comfortably bring it everywhere you want.
Amazing service is provided by InstaVR app platform. Their online chat is clear, quick and friendly (the girl was very kind indeed). Why should you buy it? (I suggest a year subscription). Because:
1. You are a researcher and you need constantly new contents to work with;
2. You need something easy to learn and to use;
3. You need something compatible with common VR headset, such as Gear VR (one of the lowest and most performative HMD, but you need at least a Galaxy S6 inside it).
4. Maybe because you want to distribute your app also for business purposes.
5. Just need a way to express yourself.
A wide and wild world constantly growing.
InstaVR allows working with 360° Videos and to create connections among them and with the Users. 360° Videos are the new frontier of content cretion. Almost everyone can generate a VR app. It is a further step towards the democratization of VR. Really keen on it!
Finally, but not least, there is Oculus, the masterpiece. However, it is not easy to find a way to contact them directly and quickly through the online store. One of the best way is using facebook. Oculus performs very well with GS63VR STEALTH PRO 4K (GEFORCE® GTX 1060), even there are some issues with the controller you decide to use. However, you can use it with almost every joystick (but you can overcome them with several trials). Maybe better if it is plugged in and not wifi connected.
Dears, hope that these few tips could be useful and, yes, it has been only my experience. Maybe someone else has been able to find everything, or did not.
8,000 euros and that’s really the best of VR now! The only thing lacks is you to use it…
